I remember the first time Barry squeezed his way into my heart. I was 10 years old and listening to the radio. A song came on that just made me melt. It was Barry's mega hit "Mandy"....

![]() The Day Barry and I Met
What a day that was... I was 22 years old and still GA GA over the man. I heard he was going to be in downtown Chicago at a bookstore, Kroch and Brentano's, to promote the release of his new book "Sweet Life". I HAD to be there. The day of the book signing, I got dressed up in my prettiest dress with visions of Barry falling in love with me at first sight. God, was I goofy back then. (still am) My aunt, Nancy, picked me up and we drove downtown. I couldn't believe what we saw when we got there. Over 3000 people in line outside. ALL waiting to see Barry. So, I took my place in line and the wait began. I stood there with Nancy for 4 hours before we even made it to the front door of the bookstore. I was getting nervous by this time. My turn to get my book signed was coming up soon. What would I say? What would I do? I was sure I was going to make a fool out of myself. Barry was sitting at a small table with a couple of body guards, and another guard was letting people go to the table one at a time. By this time, there were only 2 people ahead of me. I thought I might throw up. The guard put his hand on my shoulder and said "Your turn." Barry's back was to me as I was approaching the table at which he was seated. Just before I got to the table, he turned around, reached his hand out to take my book, and asked "What's your name?" In a crackling nervous voice, I said "Naji." Barry asked "How do you spell it?" At that moment, my brain was temporarily nonfunctional, but I managed to recall the spelling of my name and told him. After Barry signed my book, he looked down at my name he had written and said "That's a BEAUTIFUL name." Of course, in my MIND I heard him say "You are the most beautiful woman I have ever seen." It took a second for me to come back down to earth. He handed my book back to me and turned to talk to the guard. For some reason, I couldn't bring myself to leave the table. My brain was saying "legs move", but nothing would happen. So, Barry turned back towards me with a puzzled look on his face, wondering why the heck I was still standing there. I had to come up with something quick! In my moment of nervous desperation, I blurted out "May I have a hug, Mr. Manilow?" Not only did he get right up and reach over the table and give me a BIG hug, he also gave me a HUGE kiss, right on the lips !!!!!! (I felt my life was complete !!..hahahaha) In a daze, I left the book store. I dont really remember anything after that. I was almost in a state of shock for the next few hours. This is one of my most treasured memories.
